Lip creams, they're all the rage these days. Every brand under the sun is coming out with new ranges, new colours, new formulas. I have had the NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams, & the Australis Velourlips Matte Cream for a while now. I fell in love with how easy they are to apply, I can get a more precise line over using a traditional lipstick bullet, and they tend to last a while on the lips as most formulas tend to dry or set.
In the next two posts I am going to show you my collection of NYX & Australis lip creams, along with swatches on my lips, and mini reviews about each colour. Enjoy!
Let's start with Australis. The Velourlips have been out for a while now, initially it was three* colours. They have now expanded their range to a total of 15 colours! I have two of the original colours, MA-LI-BOO and TOK-I-O. They are extremely pigmented colours. They also smell like a sweet, delicious, candy filled party.
First colour is MA-LI-BOO, it is a super hot pink, almost fluorescent. It goes on a little patchy at first, so it is a good idea to do two coats, but don't wait till the first coat is dry, otherwise I find it starts to tug at the colour, and kind of peel it off. I do love this colour, but I find that this colour can be a little drying, so it is definitely a good idea to put on some lip balm first. I really love this colour, but the texture once dry can be a little uncomfortable. It almost dries a little sticky, so don't rub your lips together, or I noticed it kind of starts to ball up and come off. I wouldn't recommend putting this on before you are going out to eat. This is a colour that you wear out to town, or a party. Or, you could just rock it every day. Just be sure to keep a mirror & the lip colour in your bag.
Next colour is SHANG-HI. I bought this colour recently at the last 40% off Make-up sale at Priceline. I was a little concerned about getting another Velourlips, as the last two colours I bought, I found the texture to be a little off. I don't know whether Australis changed the formula since the initial launch, or whether it is because this colour isn't a bright fluoro colour, but the formula and texture of SHANG-HI is awesome. It really dries to a velour/suede finish, still has a slightly sticky feel, but I ate with this colour on, and it more-so faded, rather than ball up. Whatever they did with this colour, the formula rocks! This colour is still bright, but has an element of class to it. You could wear this to a fancy party/dinner and not feel like everyone is staring at your lips. I really like this colour a lot!
Last colour I have from Australis is TOK-I-O. This colour reminds me of the Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory movie where Violet Beauregard turns into a blueberry. I bought this one at the same time as MA-LI-BOO, so it still has more of a stickier finish, once again, I wouldn't recommend wearing this to somewhere you will be eating. This colour was a little thinner as well on first application, and I found myself touching up spots where you could still see some of my natural lip colour. This is a very bright colour, but I love it! It is a much richer colour than LimeCrime Airborn Unicorn, I find that colour more pastely. This colour is the most dry out of the three.
You can pick up the Australis Velourlip Matte Creams from your local Priceline, or direct from Australis via their website. I know K-Mart has recently started selling Australis, but I am not sure if they're stocking these. Let me know in the comments if they are! These retail at $9.95 for 10ml. i do find the staying power of the Velourlips is longer than the NYX Soft Matte Lip Cremes, possibly because the formula is thicker than NYX and seems more pigmented. Overall I really like the Velourlips, and next time Priceline have a sale, I think I will pick up a few more 'natural' colours.
Part Two of my Matte Lip Cream collection will be up soon, be sure to check back for it!
